Seventy metres of ice, standing above a lake, for nearly five kilometres. That is the front of Perito Moreno, and it is the part almost every photograph shows. What the photographs cannot carry is the scale problem: with no trees, no buildings and nobody standing anywhere near the ice, your eye has nothing to measure it against. The ice face at Perito Moreno rises up to 70 metres above the surface of Lago Argentino and runs nearly 5 kilometres wide. That wall is only the front edge. Behind it the glacier stretches back and upward into the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the shared ice mass it flows out of.

The 70 metre figure describes what you see from the walkways, measured from the waterline up. More ice sits below the surface, and far more reaches back from the front in a long tongue of moving ice that climbs toward the ice field. Width is the easier number to feel once you are there. The face is wide enough that from one balcony you can look left, look right, and still fail to hold both ends of it in a single frame.
Scale is exactly what photographs lose. Nothing beside the ice offers a familiar reference, so the wall reads as a pretty blue backdrop until something moves. Then a block breaks off the front, the crash arrives a beat after your eyes find it, and the arithmetic suddenly lands. Boats supply the other reference point. Tour boats work in to roughly 300 to 400 metres of the ice, close enough that the wall fills the windows and far enough back to stay clear of the wave a collapse can push out. Where Is Perito Moreno Glacier, And What Park Is It In?
Perito Moreno sits inside Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz province, southern Argentine Patagonia, about 78 kilometres southwest of El Calafate on a fully paved road. The drive takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The park carries a UNESCO World Heritage listing, which is part of why access is managed and ticketed.

Los Glaciares is a large park with several famous glaciers inside it, and Perito Moreno is the one you can reach on wheels. The UNESCO World Heritage listing for Los Glaciares National Park covers the whole protected area, including the ice field margins, the lakes fed by them, and the Fitz Roy massif far to the north near El Chaltén. Most visitors never see those other pieces. They come for the one glacier with a road, a car park and a hillside of steel walkways facing the ice.
Getting to El Calafate is the longer half of the journey. The town has its own airport, Comandante Armando Tola International (FTE), about 23 kilometres east of the centre, with frequent domestic flights from Buenos Aires taking around three hours and connections through Bariloche. How Did Perito Moreno Glacier Form?
Glaciers like Perito Moreno form where snow piles up faster than it melts away. Year after year, buried layers compress, air is squeezed out, and grainy snow turns first into firn and then into dense glacial ice. Once the mass is thick enough, gravity takes over and the ice begins to flow downhill.

The Patagonian version of that process is driven by wind. Moisture-loaded westerlies come off the Pacific, hit the Andes, and drop their load as snow on the high ground of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. That high ground is the accumulation zone: more snow arrives each year than leaves. Downslope, where the ice reaches lower and warmer elevations, melting and calving take mass away instead. Perito Moreno is the tongue that carries ice from the first zone into the second, and its front happens to end in water rather than on dry land.
That last detail shapes everything visitors experience. A glacier that ends on land loses mass slowly, by melting at its snout. A glacier that ends in a deep lake loses it in blocks, violently, whenever the front fractures. We are not going to hand you a birthday for this glacier. Ice arriving at the face today fell as snow a long way back in time and a long way upslope, and published estimates of that transit vary with the method used to measure it, so treat any single confident age figure you read online with suspicion. What can be said plainly is that the ice at the front is old, compressed, and dense enough to have had almost all of its trapped air squeezed out of it.
Which is also why it is blue. Air bubbles scatter light in all directions and make ordinary snow look white. Take the bubbles out and the remaining dense ice absorbs the warm red end of the spectrum while blue passes through and scatters back, so the freshly exposed faces inside a crevasse or on a newly calved block glow in a colour that looks artificial in photos and is completely real in person.
Why Is Perito Moreno Famous When Bigger Glaciers Exist?
Access, mostly. A paved road runs to a hillside of steel walkways that face the ice head on, so anyone who reaches El Calafate can stand opposite an active calving front within two hours. Add licensed ice trekking on the glacier itself and a periodic ice dam collapse, and the fame follows.

Plenty of glaciers are longer, thicker and more remote. Very few of them are watchable. Most of the world's great ice needs an expedition, a ski plane or a multi-day approach on foot, and the reward at the end is usually a view from a moraine several kilometres off. Perito Moreno inverts that. The park has done the hard part for you: a viewing infrastructure of stairs and balconies built into the slope of the Magallanes Peninsula, directly across a narrow channel from a face that is fracturing all day.

Then there is the walking. Is Perito Moreno Glacier Growing Or Shrinking?
Both answers you have probably read are out of date. For about half a century Perito Moreno held a rough equilibrium, its front advancing roughly two metres a day while most glaciers worldwide retreated. Research published in 2025 documents a real change: more than 800 metres of retreat between 2019 and 2024.

Start with what the old reputation actually meant, because it gets misquoted constantly. An advance of about two metres a day at the face is a flow rate, not a gain. Ice was arriving at the front at roughly that speed and being lost at roughly the same speed through calving and melt, so the position of the front stayed close to stable. That balance made Perito Moreno genuinely unusual: a large glacier holding its ground while comparable ice worldwide pulled back. It is where the popular line about one of the only glaciers on Earth that is not retreating came from.
The 2025 research is what changed the picture. Alongside that 800 metre retreat between 2019 and 2024, it documents thinning accelerating more than sixteenfold, from around 0.34 metres per year historically to roughly 5.5 to 6.5 metres per year now, with the period since 2015 producing the fastest and most sustained mass loss recorded here in 47 years. How Close Can You Actually Get To The Ice?
Three distances, and they answer different questions. The walkways put you on the slope opposite the face with the whole front in view. Boats work in to roughly 300 to 400 metres, so the wall fills your field of vision. Guided ice treks put crampons on your boots and take you onto the glacier itself.
Each one trades something away. From the walkways you get the full width, the best chance of catching a collapse somewhere along the face, and unlimited time to stand still. From a boat you lose the panorama and gain the height: at a few hundred metres the ice stops being scenery and starts being a wall, and the blues in the fractures come alive. Boats hold that distance deliberately, because a large collapse throws ice and pushes a wave.
The third distance is the one people remember. A guided ice trek crosses the lake by boat, walks a stretch of Andean lenga forest along the shore, then fits crampons at the ice edge for roughly an hour and a half of actual walking on the glacier, with a guide reading the surface ahead of you. The full day runs about nine to ten hours including hotel pickup, the crossing and time on the walkways, and the standard version is open to ages 8 to 65.
Photographers should think about distance differently again, since the best frames are rarely the closest ones. The widest views come from the upper balconies, and the most dramatic ones from a boat deck looking up.
What Does It Cost To Visit, And What Do You Book Ahead?
Foreign visitors over six pay a park entrance fee of around ARS 50,000. Check the current rate and what it converts to in your own currency shortly before you travel, because Argentina's exchange rate moves fast. Tickets are sold online through the national parks portal or bought in person at the gate.
The fee is tiered by residency. Argentine nationals pay a lower rate, Santa Cruz residents lower again, and students holding Argentine ID have their own bracket. Children under six enter free, as do Argentine retirees and pensioners resident in the country, residents of El Calafate, El Chaltén and Tres Lagos, people with disabilities plus one companion, and Malvinas War veterans. One detail that saves money and is easy to miss: a second visit within 72 hours of the first is charged at half price, which makes two shorter days on the walkways cheaper than most people assume.
