Should You Shoot For Scale Or For The Calving?
They need different setups and usually different positions. Scale shots want a wide lens, a high vantage point and something recognisable in frame for reference. Calving shots want a longer lens, a fixed position pointed at an active section of the face, and the patience to keep watching the same spot for a long time.

What Time Of Day Gives The Best Light On The Ice?
Early morning and the last hours before sunset. Low sun rakes across the face and picks out the texture of the seracs, while midday sun flattens everything into white glare. The glacier faces roughly east, so morning light hits it more directly, and golden hour in summer runs very late this far south.

Overhead light is the enemy here. At noon the ice is a bright, low-contrast slab, the blues wash out, and your camera's meter fights you the whole time. That is also, inconveniently, when most group tours arrive.

How Do You Actually Catch A Calving Event On Camera?
Pick an active section of the face, frame it slightly wider than you want the final image, switch to continuous burst, use a fast shutter of at least 1/1000, and keep the camera up. Then wait. Most successful calving photos come from photographers who held one framing for twenty minutes rather than reacting quickly.

Practical advice for a boat day: get outside early and claim a rail position, keep a lens cloth in a pocket where you can reach it, and shoot both directions rather than only at the ice, because floating bergs with the glacier behind them make better compositions than the wall alone. How Does The Weather Change Your Photos?
More than season does. Wind decides whether you can hold a camera steady, cloud decides whether you get texture or glare, and rain on the lake surface kills reflections. Overcast is underrated: soft light keeps the blue in the ice. Full sun at midday is the hardest condition to shoot well.
Patagonian weather turns over fast, which cuts both ways. A wet arrival often clears within the hour, so the visitors who pack up and leave early are frequently the ones who miss the best light of the day. Wait it out under the shelter at the top of the complex.

Can You Get Good Glacier Photos On A Phone?
Yes, with two adjustments. Use the ultra-wide for scale and put a person in frame, and stop relying on digital zoom for calving, which turns ice into mush. Lock exposure by tapping the ice and dragging down slightly, otherwise the phone will blow out the highlights and lose the texture entirely.
