What'S The Age Limit For Ice Trekking At Perito Moreno?
Two ice-trekking products run on this glacier and they have very different age brackets. Knowing which one you are actually booking saves a lot of confusion at the pier.
Allow a full day for the journey, boat crossing and guided ice walk.
At a glance: MiniTrekking and Big Ice differ in age limits and walking demands. Transfer and walkway time depend on the selected option.

Age limits on glacier treks confuse people because two different numbers circulate online, and both are correct. They belong to two different products. One takes children as young as eight; the other will not take anyone over fifty. Sorting out which is which before you book is the difference between an easy morning and an argument at the boat pier.
What Is The Age Limit For Ice Trekking At Perito Moreno?
It depends on the product. Mini Trekking, the shorter guided walk this site's trekking and cruise tour sells, accepts ages 8 to 65. Big Ice, a separate and considerably harder trek run on the same glacier, accepts ages 18 to 50. Both limits are firm, not guidelines. Both are operated by Hielo & Aventura, the sole park concessionaire licensed to put people on the ice. Because the rules come from the concessionaire rather than from individual booking desks, no agent can wave a fourteen-year-old onto Big Ice or a seventy-year-old onto the ice at all. Our side-by-side of Mini Trekking and Big Ice sets out the rest of the differences.

Why Do Ice Treks Have An Upper Age Limit At All?
Because the ice is alive and there is no infrastructure on it. Groups walk on an actively moving glacier laced with crevasses, in crampons, with no handrails, no benches and no quick way off. Anyone on the ice has to be able to get themselves back across it under their own power. Crampon walking is also a specific skill your legs have not practised. You plant each foot flat and deliberately, keep a wider stance than usual, and the muscles that complain afterwards are ones ordinary hiking does not use. Add a Patagonian wind and wet ice and the physical margin narrows. The upper limit is a blunt instrument, but it stands in for a fitness assessment nobody can run on a hundred people at a boat pier.

Why Is The Big Ice Limit So Much Tighter?
Because Big Ice is a genuinely demanding day. It puts you on the ice for around 3.5 to 4 hours instead of 1.5, runs about 12 hours in total, and reaches it via a long hike across moraine, which is loose, uneven rock rather than trail. It also goes deeper into crevasse and ice-cave terrain. That combination is why the bracket narrows to 18 to 50. This site does not sell Big Ice, and it is a real option in El Calafate for people who want it, so it is worth naming honestly rather than pretending it does not exist. If you want it, book it through Hielo & Aventura directly. For everyone else, the shorter trek covers the same ice with a far wider door.

Which Trek Does This Site Actually Sell?
The Mini Trekking version, bundled into the trekking and cruise tour from El Calafate. Ages 8 to 65, about 90 minutes on the ice with crampons, a boat crossing of Lago Argentino, a short walk through lenga forest to reach the ice, and time at the walkways, all inside one day of roughly 11 hours. Crampons and the safety briefing come from the guide, so you are not buying technical equipment for a single morning. It rates 4.8 across more than 8,551 bookings, which tells you the operation runs at volume in real Patagonian conditions. Prices change with season and currency, so see live prices on the listing. Anyone weighing whether the ice time justifies the cost can read our honest verdict on Mini Trekking.

What If You Are Outside The Age Range?
You still get the glacier, just not from on top of it. The walkways themselves do not share the ice-trek age bands. Individual boat and private-tour products still have age, boarding and vehicle conditions, so check the exact option for your party. The walkways-focused full-day trip runs about 9 hours with an optional boat safari and is the budget-friendly route. The navigation tour brings you close to the ice walls from the water. A private family day gives you a vehicle and a guide who sets the pace, which suits both grandparents and small children. Our guide for seniors and travellers with limited mobility goes through which viewpoints involve stairs and which do not, and whether you can walk on the glacier at all answers the question behind the question.

What About Children Under Eight?
Under eight, there is no ice trekking anywhere on this glacier, from any operator. The minimum age of 8 for Mini Trekking is fixed. Children below it do the balconies and, if the family wants water-level views, an optional boat trip, both of which suit them better than an eleven-hour day would. That is not a downgrade. The classic view of a 5 km wide, 70 metre ice wall comes from the walkways, and the cracking noise carries far enough that children usually react to the sound before they spot the falling ice. Our list of glacier experiences that work for kids covers what holds their attention, and the walkways and viewpoints guide shows which circuits are shortest.
