The glacier moves. Ice at the face has long pushed forward on the order of two metres a day, blocks the size of buildings break off into Lago Argentino without warning, and the crevasse field shifts week to week. That is why the answer to this question comes with a condition attached rather than a flat yes.
Can You Walk On The Perito Moreno Glacier?
Yes, but only on a guided ice trek with crampons fitted by the operator. Mini Trekking puts you on the surface for about 1.5 hours with a guide and a safety briefing, on a route chosen that day. Walking out independently is not permitted, and doing it in ordinary shoes is not safe at any point.
Every ice walk on Perito Moreno runs through Hielo y Aventura, which holds the sole park concession for glacier trekking. There is no permit you can apply for as a private visitor, no section of ice open to walk-up access, and no rental counter for crampons at the gate. Why Can'T You Just Walk Out There Yourself?
Because it is an active, crevassed glacier rather than a frozen lake. Crevasses hide under thin snow bridges, meltwater channels cut deep runnels through the surface, and the whole mass is in motion. Guides route around what has opened up since the last group crossed, and that knowledge is a day old at most.

Guides also carry rope, know where the surface has thinned, and turn groups around when conditions call for it. None of that is available to a visitor who wanders off a boardwalk. Park staff enforce the boundary for the same reason, and the concession structure exists so that one operator is accountable for who is out on the ice and when.
How Is Walking On The Ice Different From The Walkways?
The walkways are steel and timber platforms built on the Magallanes Peninsula facing the glacier, across a channel of water. You are near the ice, sometimes startlingly near, but never on it. The ice trek is a separate ticket that crosses the lake by boat and starts from the far shore.
Confusing the two is the single most common mistake in trip planning. Someone books a walkways day expecting to touch the glacier, then finds a railing between them and a face that stands up to 70 metres above the lake and runs nearly 5 km wide. What Does The Guided Ice Walk Involve?
A boat crossing of Lago Argentino, a guided hike through Andean lenga forest along the lateral moraine, then crampons fitted and a briefing at the ice edge before roughly 1.5 hours walking the surface in a small group. On the ice you walk single file behind the guide, over rolling white terrain veined with blue meltwater. Groups are kept small and stay together, so pace is set by the slowest walker rather than the keenest. Expect stops while the guide explains what formed the shape in front of you, and expect the return leg to feel shorter than the approach. Nothing about the walk demands technical skill. It demands a steady footing and the willingness to be cold and wet-footed for an hour and a half.
Who Is Allowed On The Ice?
Mini Trekking accepts ages 8 to 65. The harder Big Ice route, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours on the surface across a 12-hour day, is limited to ages 18 to 50. Both windows are enforced at check-in, not treated as guidance, and no amount of fitness argument moves them.
Reasonable mobility is the other requirement. The approach hike crosses uneven moraine, and the ice surface undulates. What Do You Need To Wear On The Ice?
